5 therms per hour at $1.08 per therm costs $5.40 an hour. Figure 5 hours a day to power the fridge, microwave, computer, heat water or provide space heat for 27 dollarettes per day, running wide open.
Even if the outage lasts a week, you are out a couple hundred dollarettes to live like a (relative) king and provide drop cords to your favorite neighbors.
All this without having to pick up a single diesel can.
I've spent a *lot* more to get a *lot* less. :)

I would think one would size a cogenerator so the waste heat was sufficient for heating the house and providing hot water. So the cost would be the same as if one was using natural gas to heat the house and heat water. The electricity would just be a bonus.

I was a long time resident in California and experienced hundreds perhaps a thousand earthquakes. Quiet often utilities were temporarily interrupted but the natural gas service was never interrupted for my area by an earthquake.
No, it was meant for emergencies. Saaay, like that little burp San Bruno (your up-the-street neighbor, prolly the same gas company, no?) had last year.

After I replaced all the gas piping from the meter to my furnace, and all the branches I removed a cap off a tee right beside the furnace for a few seconds, till I smelled the gas. I replaced the cap and let it dissipate for a while, then went back & lit it. The tee was where the pipe turned 90° from a vertical drop, and entered the furnace. It was only about 10" from there to the valve.
