Anyone recognise this spindle nose?

I have a chuck backplate here that turned up with some other stuff a while back. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what lathe/s if might fit. The spindle nose for it would be similar to a Myford pattern but much larger. The register section would be 2 inch diameter and thread looks like 2" x

8tpi. Ring any bells with anyone.

Cheers,

-Neil F.

When you say "looks like" do you mean you've put thread gauges up against it or are you guessing

hardinge is 2 and 5/16" x 10tpi

if its that ill take it . :)

Same here Neil !

I have 2 by 8tpi I acquired and was wondering what is was good for. Its 7 inch diameter and 3/4inch thick. 4 bloody great big bolt holes, two slotted and two open about 7/8". Anyone interested let me know, I'll send them a photo. it doesn't look like a chuck backplate to me, and thats not enough holes for a faceplate, and no drill marks to indicate it came from a stand drill - so I have been mystified since I acquired it.

Could it be a driving plate for between-centres turning ?

Sorry Mark, it's definitely 2" x 8tpi, so I guess it isn't Hardinge.

No Bob, it's definitely a chuck backplate. It has four mounting holes and a chuck register turned on its outer face and there are still faint circles of the chuck's own screw heads left by coolant surface corrosion. It would have been an eight to ten inch chuck I would guess, so quite a meaty lathe.

Hello from Oregon. A 2" X 8TPI spindle nose is on my Montgomery War

Model 2130 lathe, a Logan Mod. 200. It is non standard since it cam with a 1 1/2 in. X 8 TPI ball bearing spindle with a bore just over 3/ in. A South Bend 8 3/8" face plate came with it but is threaded 1 7/8"

8 tPI & had to be enlarged & rethreaded. So probably not a standard S size, either. The spindle is 1 1/4" bore with 12 3/4" length and has #11 B & S taper! Lathe made in 1948 and modified while resident at saw mill sporting bronze adjustable bearings. A 7 1/2" Cushman 3 ja chuck with no backing plate came with it. The fitted 4 jaw chuc backing plate is labeled with a large casting no. 2. So yes, possible trade, purchase, whatever, might be arranged. Logan Actuator, a part supplier for Logan lathes does not list that size, either, the nex step being 2 1/4 X 8TPI. Everyone seems to use 1 1/2" X 8TPI & Grizzl uses 1 3/4 X 8 TPI but finding the 2 X 8 is a matter of serindipity Seems the rather prosaic 2 inch size got left out. Interesting forum. Thanks, Ra
