Colouring Araldite / Epoxy

What can I mix with Araldite / Epoxy to make to set black, please?

I thought of laser toner.

Laser toner should work well.

Graphite works well - a clockmaking friend of mine uses it to fill in engraved letters on clock dials. For small quantities he makes carbon using a candle flame on a piece of sheet metal. Alternatively, grind up some barbecue charcoal to a very fine powder (probably not in the wife's coffee grinder though...)

I've used powder poster paints (from any half-decent artists suppliers) to colour epoxy in all sorts of colours, including black.

Laser toner would work but be careful - its very fine powder and not nice for your lungs.

Aside from the proper pigments made specifically for the purpose...

Acrylic paint - artist shops sell small tubes/bottles.

You can also use powdered spirit stain ( soluble in meths ). It might possible to use laser toner...give it a bash.

In both cases I'd advise you heat the resin whilst mixing in the pigment - you may find you need less than you thought. It will also take slightly longer for the resin to fully cure if using acrylic paint ( though the heating speeds the process up ).

Activated charcoal works well. I used it to repair some damaged bakelite pulleys on old 8mm lathes.

Buy a cheap tube of 'student' quality acrylic paint from WH Smith, dirt cheap & it works fine. The setting time of the epoxy will be slightly extended though. Mike

Thank you for all the replies.

On re-assembly, I found a bit of "solvent weld" was enough to do the job- and allow another go at "re-celling", should they fail again.

I rub a bit of carbon fibre rod I got as a Kite spare on some very course sandpaper and put the resulting dust through a fine mesh which removes most of the unwanted abrasive particles. I figure it might even strengthen the araldite. I certainly makes it nice and black.
