cutting three grooves in round brass

G'Day All, have to machine three, equispaced, round bottomed grooves -6mm deep into

12mm dia brass. Any suggestions as to best tool---round nosed ball drill or carbide burr? Many thanks, Darius Bartlett.

6 mm deep? That will cut right through 12 mm rod.

Sorry about that, it's to make a set of three lobed(star), thumb screw heads. Width of cut is the 6mm, Depth approx 2-2.5mm Apologies for the oversight. Darius. France.

The tool you need is called a parting off tool because a 6mm deep groove in

12mm rod is all the way through it. A hacksaw will do the job if you're stuck :)

Ah! Longitudinal grooves - that makes more sense.

As you don`t appear to have a mill, get a piece of 20mm dia brass, drill three equi spaced 4-5mm holes up the end of it then turn the dia down until you get the effect you want. Mark.
