Slot drill / End mill with radiused tip

Hi,

I want to make some parts with slots that have a filleted bottom rather than a

90 degree join (IYSWIM) so I wondered if there is such a thing as a slot drill or end mill with the very tips of the edges chamfered or radiused to a couple of millimeters. Kind of like a flat bottomed ball end end mill. Can anyone tell me if these exist and if so what are they called and who sells them ?

Mnay thanks,

Boo

Are you looking for a bullnose endmill, then? That is the name I order them under, on this side if the water (Canada)

They are available in stock diameters and corner radii, or they can be custom ground.

Everything can be got, once you know what to ask for!

Yes they are available and I know them as corner radiusing slot drills or end mills. The problem is since the advent of CNC grinding there is no defined terminology for end mills / slot drills etc.

Even different manufacturers call the same item by different names.

Hi Boo

You could try PJ Tooling as I know they regring all kinds of stuff and he`s quite cheap at around £1.50 per end mill. He may be able to grind a standard end mill to suit. I have no connection other than he has sharpened some mills for me and also made me some odd size counterbores. Good prices and fast service. The guys name is Paul . snipped-for-privacy@blueyonder.co.uk

Thanks to all for the answers but I think I have not been clear in what I need. I am trying to make a slot as follows :

------ ------- ######| |###### ######| |###### ######| |###### ######| |###### ######| |###### #######\_____/####### ######################

----------------------

This has chamfers in the bottom as denoted by the \ and /. These chamfers could be concave radiuses instead.

I'm therefore looking for a cutter like the following :

|#######| |#######| |#######| |#######| |#######| \_____/

The chamfers here could be convex radiuses instead. I did look uo bull nose cutters but they just have a single semicircular tip and I want a flat bottom instead. Also, all the corner rounding cutters I looked for are concave and are used to round externaledges and so are not much use for the internal chamfers I want.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

just take a standard slot drill and grind the end of the flutes to suit

You looked at ball nose, not bull nose cutters, then.

I see that APTC does not seem to know thw difference, from their site.

Any real tooling suppliers in your phone book? Time to make some calls.

Tell them you are looking for a bull nosed slot dril, tell them the diameter you want, and the radius you want. See what that can get you.

Or you can do what thousands before you have, and grind the radii yourself, and stone the edges to final form.

If you are making stuff to spec, buy from a supplier that carries what you need. If it's hobby stuff, good enough, really is.

Try also the term "corner radius endmill" and see if that gets you any better info.

I'll say it again, J&L do the cutters you want. eg a 10mm dia cutter has

3mm radius corners, 8mm cutter 2mm radius corners etc.

Hi,

Thanks all for the helpful advice, ssorry for the repeated post above but I got confused by the nomenclature.

It seems to be quite common to call ballnose endmills bullnose endmills in the UK, this threw me, hence my repeated post.

Yep, that did the trick, I had misread Johns post above as "corner rounding endmill" when he'd actually said "corner radius endmill" which is a completely different thing. Several posters here have pointed out that J&L sell them and they are on offer atm so I will put an order in.

Thanks again to all who answered,
