Alternate BP source?

Could this be a feasible way of getting small quantities of BP for ejection charges, for those can't otherwise get any locally?

Quantities of BP recovered from those rimfire cartridges would not be worth the effort. Go to a gun show, try to find some 4F BP there. When you do find some, get 2 or 3 pounds. That ought to last you a long time.

The alternative is smokeless powders, which I have heard can be made to work with some effort. Never bothered to try it myself because I have enough 4F to get me by for a long time.

In a word, no.

Extracting the powder from these would be VERY dangerous.

No, not only will a rim fire cart go off while you are trying to open it, but what is inside is NOT BLACK POWDER.

It's a nitro cellulose smokeless powder that will be of no good for rockets.

Rimfires primers are different then center fires. they go off when you compress the rim, and opening them is a good way to loose your eyes or fingers.

Nope, it is black powder, it's not a smokeless powder cartridge.

There are black powder cartridges, in fact many cartridges were originally designed for BP, like the .45-70, which is used today in both smokeless and BP forms.

As for opening the case, it looks like the charge is retained by a small disc of cardboard, and you're not going to set off a rimfire cartridge that easily.

sheesh..if you need some BP for an ejection charge open up a mmx-2 or 1/4A model rocket motor.....

don't ask don't tell,wink,nod.......

or use crimson powder:

Humm,, mine seem to be able to go off real easy ;)

Me, I mean , why would you mess with a rimfire cartridge from CTD , when you can mail order a can of BP from a few sources.

BTW, I am a customer of CTD, and I'm aware of the 45-70 and other cartridges.

I have a reloading bench for centerfire rifle.

You go right ahead and open those Winchesters if you really want ;)

When struck by a firing pin, yes, but from handling? They sell bricks of 500 loose .22's by the millions every year, never heard of one going off accidentally.

In any case, I would never recommend doing anything like prying at a cartridge with pliers or metal picks, or anything like that.

can mail order a can of BP from a few sources.

COOL, where?! No gun shops anywhere around me sell BP, and I even have a legitimate reason for owning BP since I own a .50 cal. caplock, and I prefer the smoke and smell and flame of BP over pyrodex anyday.

My brother just got a setup, I'm dying to try some reloading myself. I just joined a range for the first time ever and plan to do a LOT of shooting this year. It's not just the cost, but working up that "perfect load" for your rifle can be lots of fun.

That's the first thing a newbe does, use a pliers and a sharp screw driver.

It's been posted on this group at least twice in the past two years, I htink once in the past 6 weeks.

do some searches or perhapes the last poster will repost.

Maine powder does, but wants a 25# min order.

what state are you in ? you might have one around a corner.

You will find someone at the range who will tell you where to get the BP, believe me, they know .

Grind up a BP motor...

Take apart a firework (especially 1.75/3 inch shells, the lift charge is useful for that)

or just drive around for a gunshop that sells bp... theres got to be one around!

Both of these is blackpowder and they are much safer and cheaper than taking apart a rimfire cart. Or else you can make them yourself... try rec.pyrotechnics for info on that.

I doubt that would be safer than picking the cardboard cap out of a BP rimfire cartridge.

But when I was a kid, we would unwrap a C motor, tape a fuse to it, arrange all our little green GI army guys around it in a circle, and play "nuclear test shot training exercise".

Makes a cool little mushroom cloud! :-O

cartridge.

Were there any class action lawsuits?

Probably no survivors.

Yes, they survived, but then the horrific effects of radiation from my magnifying glass death-ray caused their flesh to melt, making them mutate and merge together in hot, molten plastic puddles of agonizing torture and death, while I delighted in their imagined screams and ignored their pleas for mercy.

Ah, the simple, happy joys of childhood.

Ummmm..... NO. Where are you that you can't buy a can of Black Powder?

PS BP .22 blanks are neat, but they will rust the hell out any firearm that you shoot them in unless you clean the snot out of them pronto!
