There was no catapult used at Kill Devil Hill. The catapult was used when they moved the operation back to Ohio and didn't have the Carolina winds to assist their takeoffs. That's when they started using the catapult.

It seems they often used the catapult, but the winds were such on the
17th that it wasn't necessary. Justified or not that is a criticism levelled by the Brazilians.Frank
