Joe Kennedy's B-24

Watching the HC bit on the Kennedy's. Was Joe Jr.s B-24 a D model? My Dad flew in the D's and said they leaked fuel and had a really freaky electrical system..prone to sparks. He mentioned several times 24s just blowing up far from fighters or flak. This was in the south pacific on raids to what is now Indonesia in 42 and 43. Just a shot in the dark as to what happened. Fuel lines from each of the B-24's fuel tanks ran to a multi-valve manifold on a bulkhead above the bomb bay. Using a short length of flexible hose, the Flight Engineer could connect any two valves to transfer or crossfeed fuel. All these connections were very leak-prone!

Savvy B-24 crews flew with the bomb bay doors always cracked open to dissipate fumes, and forbad smoking in the aircraft.

My Granddad was maintenance officer of a PB4Y unit in WW2. When I was a boy he told me he was particarly proud that none of his squadron's Libs blew up!

seventeens with the open cockpits.<

The book APHRODITE: DESPERATE MISSION , Jack Olsen (G. P. Putnam's Sons 1970) has a couple of close up photos of Aphrodite B-17s. There are better photos also, but I can't recollect where I saw them.

I managed to find a couple photos of the BQ-7, but none of the BQ-8... I found them on a Russian aviation site, let me check where it was.
