OT Dongle emulation

We have a team of engineers travelling to clients with laptops loaded with dongled software. The dongles are subject to loss, theft, breakage and malfunction. Replacement units are very expensive. There are commercial dongle emulators on the market that will read the dongle and then make the intercept between the dongle and the software. The dongle can then be safely stored in the base office. The commercial emulator companies are trading quite openly and do not alter either the original software or the dongle.

Is anyone using them and are they legal?
