Making topography... sorta...

I have the HO "Bates Mansion" kit, and found a topo map of the hill on which the original set stood. I can cut out foam to match the contours, but would like to know the best stuff to trowel in to make the slopes. Spackle could get real expensive real quick...

BTW the Mansion was based on a famous painting... "House by the Railroad"... I guess that is why Polar Lights made it HO...

. Spackle could

Professional drywall (sheetrock) tapers use premixed joint compound. It comes in a (25 lb?)box with a bag inside. It is already wet and ready to use, but is smoother if mixed a bit. It shrinks a bit less than spackle, but still too much for over a 1/4 inch layer without cracking. It already has some glue mixed in so it sticks well. It can be kept for quite a while without going bad. It starts smelling bad. I think you will find it much cheaper than spackle. Any place that sells drywall (sheetrock) should have it.

Hydrocal in 100lb bags is fairly cheap. The main gotcha is keeping it dry. I have a bucket with a tight screw-on lid (used to contain giant chlorine tablets for a home pool filter system).

Oh, you'll need to find someplace to get your 100lb bag of hydrocal:

Dear Sir, If you smooth the layers together with a rasp you can save a lot of plaster (and a lot of weight). Cordially yours, Gerard P.

"Best" is a subjective term -- especially when you don't give any criteria for measuring what makes one filler better than another --- but consider Sculptamold from American Art Clay Co.
