While the Sat-Nav is a very useful gadget, my own implementation and that of Martin's is not terribly clever, with lots of cables and multiple outlet cig-socket devices, so that the PDA can be charged as well as the TomTom GPS unit. Travelling overseas, the mass of cables and plugs always triggers interest of the wrong kind at the X-Ray machines.
Our own cradle for the PDA is a Seidio unit, and I found out today, purely by accident that it has a 5V outlet on the opposite side to the 12V input from the cigar lighter cable. I never checked what it gave out previously, assuming it was 12V.
The GPS unit needs 5V to charge the internal battery.
An hour or so with soldering iron and an old Euro-plug PSU gave me a double-ended cable for the GPS unit, so i could plug into the Seidio cradle and the GPS, plus I clamped both cables to the Seidio body with P clips (Got plenty of really diddy ones if anyone needs a couple) so that there was no strain on the plugs where they went into the body each side.
Now we have one ciggie socket plug, the straight uncoiled cable for the GPS unit is gone and we don't need the 2-way adapter any more.
Owners of non-PDA GPS units wouldn't have all this hassle of course....
