Air Arc Gouging

How much of the carbon rod should stick out from the holder? A pointer to some good operating practices would be great too. Google didn't turn up much useful info.

The bigger the air supply the better. You really need 80 psi minimum and a half inch hose is barely sufficient. You can gouge with six inches sticking out but the electrode will overheat in seconds. Two to about three inches is ideal. I start with about three inches sticking out and reset when it burns down to about one inch. If you always run too short you end up damaging the electrode holder. It is very hard on the welding machine. You should have a 400 amp capability at 100 percent duty cycle if you are going to do this regularly. You can gouge with much less amperage but as I said " It is hard on the machine" Randy

What he said. Plus; Earplugs. Lots o' protective gear. I've still got a scar about two inches from the Oh, No Spatter There place from a big airarc blob of steel going down my pocket.. That was one of those where you grit your teeth and keep going, assuming that it'll stop hurting soon- I went for a bit, but it kept burning worse 'till I finally quit and shook it out.
