MIG practice

What are some good practice tasks and projects for somebody new to MIG welding? I've been taking basic MIG classes at a local welder's shop, but it's really going to come down to practice and more practice. He will have activities to keep me busy with stuff from the scrap bins, but I'm wondering what folks here were instructed to do.

My home project was a long custom tool handle made from two scrap angles welded into a heavy-walled box section. The instructor had me lean them on the wall and weld vertically, the usual position for MIG welding on a car body. jsw

Good shop projects are stout welding tables, stock racks for steel storage, ramps to get equipment into trucks, roof racks for trucks, bottle carts for oxy/acetylene sets, shop shelves, shooting targets, garden trellises, hand rails for decks and staircases, weight lifting equipment, small trailers for ATV's or motorcycles, bicycle storage racks, christmas tree stands, snow plow blades for pick-up trucks, vehicle ramps to work on cars from underneath...

Over 16 years of teaching welding I saw every project possible.
