TIG Questions.

As a newbe TIG welder can someone please offer me advice in two areas.

  1. What grit green grinding wheel should I should for grinding my tungstens, my arc seems to be wandering?
  2. Do little sparks exploding in the arc (DC on Aluminium with HP on constant) indicate contamination in the weld? Tks in advance John Allen New Zealand

Turn the HF to start only. There is no need for it welding DC other than to start the arc and even then is is a luxury and not a necessity unless doing VERY critical work.

In the field I have used evry grit and abrasive tyoe available on the job, The shape size affect the arc stability more than the finish unless you are working with very low amperage.

Have a nice daya

It's for welding using AC. For example when welding aluminum. Since the AC waveform goes to zero periodically, you need the HF to keep the arc alive and stable.

It is needed when TIG welding using AC. Even old Square Wave TIG welders required continous HF when using SWAC TIG welding. But not stick welding. Modern Inverter Square Wave TIG welders sometimes only require HFstart or lift arc starts. The ones that don't require continuous HF have quicker switching between Square Wave polarity.

OK, I am taking TIG now at my local CC, and have been told Alum. = AC only.

However, I've been looking at the little Maxstars (and other brands), which are DC only. Is DCEP on Al an OK thing, or what? Should I use pure tungstens, or are Thoriated alright?
