Evolution Engines

I'm thinking of ordering the Horizon Hobby Evolution .61. Has anyone had any experience with this engine?

My LHS owner says they're really good engines. He flies a .40 in one of his planes. He's not the sort to push something just for a sale. It looks good to me and it's a good price. I've seen two positive reviews in magazines. I'd buy one if I needed an engine.

There was a positive review in RC Report a couple months back.

I find it interesting that the cooling fins on these engines are diagonal and not continuous (i.e. some appear to be blocked by the muffler bolts and exhaust port). It would seem that they would be less effective at cooling the head versus fins that are continous and parallel to the air flow.

It is a new product on the market. Until there is a body of experience, many folks might be less than willing to try it. I heard one salesman at Hobby Town bad mouthing it. He was a big tried and true fan of the OS engine.

All reviews in magazines (even R/C Report) have been very favorable.

I didn't know about GMS engines until I tried one. I have both a 47 and 76 and am very happy with them. I am helping someone learn on a H9 alpha and evolution 40. Then engine has run perfectly for the past two seasons.

We have several guys that have purchased trainers with the Evo engine in them and our training coordinator has praised them profusely. He said they are easy to start run well and aren't fussy about much of anything from fuel to carb settings. Sure you can't burn crappy fuel and not adjust the carb and expect it to run, but it is not as critical. Then again, if it weren't for MDS engines I wouldn't be an electric flyer today ;).

Clarence Lee gave it a good review--power and value. I don't like their ads, which encourage people not to learn anything about engines, but that's just a personal prejudice.

The problem is that many of the sales folks push their favorite product. And too often bad mouth things that they are unfamiliar with. Now, as there are good reviews and, as we have seen here, comments from users who have been successful then we will see the product take off.

Remember there are a lot of "old guys" in the hobby who tend to like the tried and true. Personally the Evo engine, even in the ads, peaked my interest. I think that Horizon Hobbies might have a winner. One that is very affordable.
