How to extend Tower Hobby TS-80 servo travel?

I am using this giant servo to rotate an electric prop to steer a video barge.

The servo must rotate 180* to reverse the prop.

In order to extend the angle of rotation, the web says that one should add a resistor to both sides of the servo potentiometer.

I also read that one should parallel the pot with an equal resistance in addition to the 2 series resistors.

This would make the resistance half of what it was and to get the same value as before the servo would have to travel twice the distance.

This seems logical.

Explanations and experience, please.

Get a retract or maybe sail servo. They are made with longer travels.

Saves pissing about.

The only problem with that is that retract servos are not proportional. They are setup to go from one 180 degree extreme to the other with no proportional control in between.

At least that is how they were the last time I played with them.
