Lipo / esc upgrade

I'm looking to upgrade to Lipo's in my Magister (680g motor). I am told that I can safely go to a 3s lipo pack but that I will need a larger esc. Can't quite find how big I'll have to go though. 30A?

50a? Any lipo experts out there that can offer an opinion?

Thanks

Also be sure the LiPo pack is good for a 40A discharge rate, e.g., a

4000 mah pack rated for 10 C, as a bare minimum. More is better. It's going to make your wallet skinnier.......

Ok, I'm rethinking this now. I had no idea it would draw 40 amps, that's some juice!!

A few points to clarify here --

1) Just because you have an ESC rated at 40 amps, that doesn't mean you need a battery pack that can deliver 40 amps. What matters is what the motor actually draws.

I do agree that it's a good idea that your battery, motor and ESC all be able to handle somewhat more current/power than they actually use

-- they'll last longer -- but they don't all have to have the same maximums.

2) If your system is drawing too much current, switch to a smaller prop and/or one with less pitch and the current draw will go down. Motocalc at

can calculate many of these things for you with remarkable accuracy before you even buy anything.

Another way to reduce the current draw is to change the gear ratio on your gearbox, if you have one, but changing the prop is often easier.
