In the US, they add a chemical to any drinkable alcohol sold over the counter. Here in Australia, they don't. That way you can poison yourself without getting sick first. Who'd have guessed that from a nanny state like Australia?

Being from the US and living here in Oz, I can assure you that both sides of this argument are correct - in their own country.

The chemical concoction known as Methylated Sprits is not drinkable in terms of purity alone and is marked as not fit for human consumption for that reason. But, unlike Isopropyl Alcohol, it is not doped. Bottoms up, if you can stand it.

In my section of the world, rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol and is neither methanol, nor ethanol.

What we call "metho" is methylated spirits, approx 95% ethanol and 5% methanol. I think the most correct alternative name is denatured alcohol. As another poster pointed out, "rubbing alcohol" has 2 popular formulations, one is similar to methylated spirits, the other is isopropyl alcohol. The confusion derives from the fact that the product is named by its use, not its composition, and both formulations serve the same function, which I think is for treating some skin ailments.

I would have thought it'd be quite difficult to remove methanol from a mixture with ethanol - I'll have to do some Googling - it sounds like some interesting chemistry.

Only way is to re distill it. The vapor temperature is around 7 degrees F lower for Methyl.

In USA it is call Denatured Alcohol - enthanol with something in it to make it undrinkable and therefore not highly taxed like drinkable spirits.

In the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, metho is called methylated spirits. In the US it is called denatured alcohol. In Europe, it may be called spirits, brennspirits (Germany), alcool a bruler (France), or alcool etilico denaturato (Italy). It is generally available in hardware stores, supermarkets, service stations, and camping/outdoors stores.

A couple of years ago I went looking for denatured alcohol and couldn't find any locally(Hamilton Texas). I wound up with a bottle of Everclear to thin epoxy with. It'll last a very long time at that cost! mk

When I was a kid metho and bootpolish was said to be the drink of choice for those who couldn't get alcohol - either too young or too poor. However, it was also known (to everyone in the way everyone knows stuff) that it would send you blind

Since my parents allowed me to have alcohol I had no reason or wish to try it, or even to drink alcohol.

I think by the time you are down to needing grog so bad that you will drink metho, you don't really care what else is it. Very sad way to be.
