TorqueRoll.com

This is a very good site. It works a lot like RC Universe used to before they screwed it up.

I agree. That's where I'm going now. it's better than R/C groups in my opinion.

I don't agree with Torqueroll as being "the place to be" at all. Sites of this nature are highly dependant upon the number of members of the group since it's the MEMBERS who are responsible for the activity on the website. I'd sure like to hear the SPECIFICS of why you think Torqueroll is "better" than RCGroupl. Torqueroll has 900 and some members while RCGroups has around 24,000 which pretty much tells you where the RCU expatriots have gone... big time, and it hasn't been Torqueroll.

RCU continues to claim close to 77,000 members but it's already been shown that the numbers they claim are bogus because of the way they handle their "membership". If you go to both RCU and RCG at the same time and look at the actual number of active users ONLINE at any given time, you'll see that RCG lags behind RCU by an average of only around 20%. Since I believe RCGroup's reporting of their total membership at 24,000 a lot more than I believe RCU's bogus claim of having 76,000 members, that would mean that the actual membership of RCU is more like 28,800 members and not the 76,000 that they "report" as having (RCGroup's 24,000 + 20%). The "missing" 48,000 members are just that; missing.

RCG may have only 20% less users at any one time, but the forums are dramatically less active than the ones on RCU. I took a look at the forum topics that I am interested in (Giant Scale, Warbirds, Jets, Scale Models, and Kit Building) on both sites, and RCU has at least 20 new postings a day in each group. On the other hand, RCG often goes a day or two at a time with no new postings in some of these groups. Not exactly scientific, but my impression is that RCU gets a lot more use than RCG.

I disagree.

The sheer "number" of people don't make it a good site but the number of contributing users that make it a good site. Much of what makes a good site is chicken/egg. It's hard to get good people to come to a site without a lot of good people contributing to the site. Until, of course, you achieve critical mass and then it doesn't matter how good the people are and thus you have RCU.

Torqueroll.com does seem to have most of the more knowledgable posters that used to be > I don't agree with Torqueroll as being "the place to be" at all.

Yea, with 900 users, Torqueroll is quickly achieving "critical mass". Uh uh.

I don't know why we get into these conversations of which site is "THE ONE" to go to. Most of the sites are free to use any feature on the site. Visit them all!!! Sure, I'd love to see everyone visit Torqueroll (and yes, I do run it), but I also visit several other sites as well.

Each site has its own set of users and its own set of features it plans to add in the future. So why limit ourselves?

I love how analysts and accountants have all definitively pinpointed RCU's financials as well as member numbers. It continually amuses me to read the rantings of those who know everything.

Forget the numbers guys and go to every site. What you see is what you get. Pretend everyones member base is zero and then pretend every site makes $0 or if it makes you feel better pretend they all make a billion dollars. Neither of these factors makes a difference on a websites level of usefullness.

Go into the forums. Do people post there? Is it active? Go into the classifieds and notice if there are new postings every day. How many? That is all that matters to a user. I know sites like rcflying.net that boast something like 4000-5000 members yet only 2 people are online at any one time. I guess his numbers are fake? It doesn't really matter. People use a site or they don't. People will hang their hat where there is activity and where good tools and moderation are offered.

RCU isn't a $200 off the shelf software package that ANYBODY can install in 10 minutes and be a clone of the other sites in short order.

RCU has:

Full featured classified system (not discussion forum based) Full featured auction system (not discussion forum based) Both of the above built from the ground up for RC

As you can see RCU is far from a $200 off the shelf software package that is maintained by somebody in their spare time. We take this site very serious because we know our members do. This has paid off in terms of the growth of RCU which attracts 150 new members every day from all facets of the hobby.

We have outgrown our current host already and are moving to new digs in the next 2 weeks and we'll be on a 100Mbit connection with seven (count 'em 7!) dual processor machines hosting the site to bring back the snappy page load times which as of late are a little too slow for me. Once the move is complete RCU will be at its fastest ever.

If all your looking for is a discussion forum you can use ours or anybody elses. Discussion forums are dime a dozen. If you want to start your own go to

or to any of the other boards out there. There are many and you can have your own discussion forum up and running in an hour. The more the merrier!

If your looking for just a little bit more than just a discussion forum then check out RC Universe. If you ONLY want discussions then consider RCU's are the most active and our searchable archive of information is enormous with 1.5 million posts and growing by 3000 each day. It is there to serve RC modelers and help answer any questions you may have.

I sure HOPE you didn't pay $200 for the sofware. If so, you got screwed. RCU has: Multitudinous numbers of ads which make it... Clumsy to navigate to get to where you want to go. Multitudinous numbers of ads making it... A distraction to look at ANY page on the site. Charges for things that most other sites of this kind do NOT charge for. Multitudinous numbers of ads which, by their sheer number, are annoying in their own rite. etc, etc, etc,

I don't care what you CLAIM are all the benefits, all I know is that whenever I visit RCU (more seldom nowadays), I can't help feeling that, as a user, I'm just not welcome there. It's like if I invited a bunch of people over to my house for a party but charged them to park on the street, charged them more to park in my driveway, charged them for snacks, and then to really piss them off, arranged my furniture so everyone ends up tripping over something anytime they move. I spend my time at RCGroups, thank you very much. Even if they DID only have to pay $200 for the software.
