3.5" floppy/USB interfaces....

Awl --

Some older cnc mills have 3.5" floppy drives and RS232 ports for serial communication (cadcam DNC, etc).

Some companies make either a floppy/USB interface or a RS232/USB interface. This is one:

I think it runs around $600, allows a flash drive in place of floppies.

Is this something that needs to be purchased, or can a pyooter savvy diy-er do this? This would be for a 1999 Fadal 3016L . Is a floppy/USB interface practical?

Idears? Sam??

What about a $50 used laptop computer running TERMINAL (An old windows program)?

If I get a REALLY long program then I just punch all of the other ones as a single file and then I load the long one in....later, I'll delete the long one and reload all the others.

Otherwise, you can run dnc just fine through the fadal rs232 port...

--I've never had the need, but the procedure appears to be well documented in the user's manual.

At one point in time, Fadal sold a program called "Fadal Assist" that was specifically set up for DNC, I imagine it would run fine under a DOS prompt--you can probably find a copy if you dig around a bit.

Yeah, ahm lookin into the serial RS232 solution.... seems to be more versatile. And I've found cheap usb floppy emulators, so I may wind up having both, fwiw.
