Hybrid Vehicles

Does anyone know how Hybrid vehicles work? How does the vehicle propel itself when the battery is in action? Does an electric motor produce the torque in this situation? An electric motor actuating (with the magnetic field and current) directly at the Wheel's axel? Obviously the mechanism of internal combustion in pistons converted to rotational motion is not.
