[Newbie] International plug adaptors

We've recently come back to the UK from a trip to Switzerland. We took with us a couple of UK mains appliances with transformers in the plug (mobile phone chargers, that sort of thing), and found that using a normal off-the-shelf international adaptor unsatisfactory for two reasons:

  1. The UK plug design being quite large, meant that the adaptor was too big to fit in some outlets (and sometimes would hit the light switch as well.)

  1. Dangling an adaptor then a heavy transformer off the wall seemed to be asking for it all to work loose and become rather dangerous.

It seemed to me what we really needed was an adaptor with a cable between the plug and the socket - ie an ordinary Swiss plug, a length of cable, then a UK trailing socket.

Can anyone tell me if I can buy such a thing anywhere in the UK? Or if there is any reason why I could not just buy the bits and make it up myself? Or any other reason why I shouldn't do this?

Thanks in advance for any help.
