Nope, no need. The only purpose of the exam is to limit the number of "qualified" electricians, keeping the salary (and cost) high. Quite anti-capitalistic. Note the most stringent requirements for licenses are in the most socialistic cities.

Put it this way. If you want to hire an electrician we demand $35 an hour, plus $5.50 and hour for health insurance, $3.50 and hour on the pension and $2.00 and hour for the annuity. Any work over 8 hours a day from Monday to Friday is double time, Saturday is time and one half for the first 8 hours then double time for ove 8 hours, and Sunday is double time all day. Labor day is worked at triple time and other hoildays at double time. We have electricians grossing at over $4 THOUSAND a week on some jobs. Take it or leave it. The arguments are over. That is why we have unions and that is why we have contracts. And we have plenty contractors willing to hire us. After their markup, work goes at about $120 to $200 and hour. We really don't care what you think. You have a lot to learn.
I assume it is easier for you to call me a name, than to logically and factually refute what I said. But that would take leaving your emotions behind, and using your head. It would take developing enough spine to be honest about what is before you. Try to remember that convention does not equal factuality or morality.
And if you are not a Democrat, you have to be able to somehow justify supporting causes you find reprehensible in order to work under the union umbrella. The real strength in union membership is what we have been discussing, namely the qualifications and training level of the electrician. Unfortunately for the union world, they do not enjoy the near-total monopoly they once had on how their image was represented. The explosion in free dissemination of information resulting from the internet, and by the dissolution of the Fairness Doctrine in electronic media has exposed lots of left-wing horse-s*it for what it really is. This explains why unions have all but retreated from private building projects and now cling to their last bastion of hope, which is government contracting and maintenance. It also explains why Democrats are working like Santa's Elf's at placing limits on free speech in the internet realm, and at reviving the Fairness Doctrine.
P.S. Can anyone explain the apparent dichotomy between the stated revulsion by unions at the influx of criminal immigrant labor, and the simultaneous attempt to organize them in cities such as Los Angeles, and Chicago?
The main thing one needs to work "under the union umbrella" is enough smarts to figure out what will get you the best job.

I forgot to add, for remote jobs such as on the Alaska's north slope oil fields and trans-Alaska pipeline we demand and receive free board and room. My dad went on strike in 1959 for the board and room benefit and it remains as part of every work agreement today. This free board and room in most cases consist of free cleaning of rooms and bathrooms, laundry facilities, and three course hot meals three times a day. We expect New York or T-bone steak at least twice a week and prime rib usually on Sundays. Also a snack room with free ice cream, deserts, coffee, etc. is open 24 hours a day. My adversaries here can piss and moan all they want about whether or not we deserve these benefits and the pay or that we are qualified, but evidently someone thinks we are qualified or else they would not pay the price for qualified, licensed IBEW electricians, now would they? And those paying the price are the one's that count.

No, because a "racist" is someone with an unreasonable dislike or hatred of a group of people different than his own. I don't hate any group, and what I talk about is founded in facts.
