The ignitor for a metal halide lamp must suit the ballast. Usually these are generic sodium + metal halide control gear. You can pick up one from

I say this as I have been caught out in the past. The ignitor must suit the ballast as there are different types of ballast, i.e. Thorn manufacture a ballast which has 220v+230v+240v+250v tappings (and lamp o/p) for which the ignitor connects across the 220v and 240v tappings and neutral. Phase supply connects to the correct tapping. The lamp then connects across the ballast o/p and neutral. In retrospect, the Parmar (previous posting) ballast only has 240v+230v tappings and the suitable ignitor connects between the output of the ballast, the lamp and neutral. Without knowing what size lamp, make of ballast and range of tappings, it almost impossible to say if an ignitor is suitable or not. It may be worth contacting tridonic to see if your ballast is compatible, although most of their data sheets state their ignitors are only compatible with chokes (ballasts) out of their range of P Class products. Hope this helps, PF
