That's a VERY broad statement. I'd say "No, all US locks are not like Yale locks."

That said, there are many lock manufacturers, and some of them have rather novel ideas. Some of the US lock manufacturers are actually owned by foriegn companies, so it's hard to quantify 'ours' vs 'yours'.

In United Kingdom, 'Yale lock' has become a generic term for cylinder locks, and is included as such in the Oxford dictionary (despite there being multiple brands in UK). Is this the case in USA?

It seems that Yale, once the leader of the pack, has in recent years suffered a humiliating decline until it is just a ASSA-Abloy unit. Wonder if it would have been different if Yale bought the Medeco rights (I understand that Medeco was developed by the pinning subcontractor for Yale).

No. Here, in my experience, "Yale lock" refers to only locks with a "Yale" brand. Perhaps this is because we have so many brands of the basic pin-tumbler-cylinder-with-flattish-key-with-longitudinal-groove locks. Also, many of the specialized locks, e.g. IC locks, are variants of this theme.

That's a nice "what if" question.

I had a really, totally unusual moment the other day.

Customer calls, and says he's locked out. The store has a leverset on the back door and a "Yale lock" on the front door. I got there, and I was shocked beyond compare. It really was a Yale lock -- even made by Yale What we in the states would call a "rim deadbolt".

How many times does someone say a "yale lock" and it turns out to be anything or everything.
