RPL exam??

same here. I am glad that we are not forced to join them. not real sure that any locksmith in this state joined them. well ? maybe one. he is on their board...

According to Bill Phillips's book, the test is for the "International Association of Home Safety and Security Professionals' Registered Professional Locksmith registration program."

The 10 mandatory categories are not as difficult as the electives. It's sort of like basic knowledge. The electives can be difficult unless you have a lot of OJT in that particular subject. I've found the best way to pass is to attend the classes ALOA give. They pretty much guarantee you will pass the exam if you take their class.

I passed the 10 mandatory first time, but only one of the electives. The next time I sat for the exam, I was allowed to take 10 electives and needed to only pass 1 for my CRL. I thought I knew quite a lot about most of the subjects, but only passed 3 of the 10. Seems they like book learning, and also, seems like the senior locksmiths like to through a few curve balls, like schlage wafer locks etc. Some bizarre lockset, or mortise lock function like service station or worse. There must be 50 functions. What the heck is dormatory function? Vestibule function, etc. These o worse were on the exam. Also, the exams are not 100% up to date. Until recently, schlage didn't have small format IC core, but they do now. Well, I missed that question. According to the exam I took in March, they don't. It's not easy. Some really archaic stuff like corbin shell cylinders etc. Thought I knew how to masterkey and do progression, but failed that miserably. Don't know what's up there.

There is a book on how to study for the PRP. Good luck. Took me a lot of work to get my CRL.

What does it really take to pass those 10? Is it all book smarts or only knowledge you'd pick up thru years of hands on work?

It would take me 10 years to pass the key blank identification.. NEVER will see some of those things at all.. LOLOL

I respect what you have to say, but if you don't know anything about electricity, it seems that there are going to be a lot of locks that you won't be working on.

the alarm company stuff has less electronic knowledge than some of the locks we deal with.. however, they just want like ALOA, the money and nothing else but we would get a heck of an out of pocket expense to go along with it, without any 'return for investment.'

I worked almost 10 years with a First Class Ratio engineer.. and we did electronics.. some stuff was and is highly dangerous.. back in those days, 2,000 volt power supplies were the norm. --Shiva--
