inherent cost for photo-voltaics?

Can you think of any inherent reason that photo-voltaic cells must be costly?

I cannot. Processing costs are high for the devices in use today but isn't it conceivable that dirt-cheap materials and arrangements thereof are possible?

Precise alignment of components may be required but need that be costly?

Photovoltaics are cheap already--it's just that you insist on living in a manner that requires more energy than a $3 solar calculator.
