Separation of what from what? Fresh water from salt water? Methane from crude oil? U-235 from U-238?
Any other criteria? Are poisonous materials or materials that undergo explosive decomposition in contact with air acceptable? Are $2000/kg materials acceptable? Are fatty acids of cetacean origin acceptable?
Are there any mechanical constraints? If the membrane fell apart under 0.001 psi pressure, is that okay?
