What Is Carbon-Carbon?

In the early '90s GE made a high temperature gas turbine stage out of something called carbon-carbon. It could handle inlet temperatures over 3000 degrees F as long as there wasn't any O2 in the stream, otherwise it would burn up. They were hoping for a coating that would seal out O2.
