Gears Breadboard

I'm looking for a 'breadboard' type hobby/prototype platform for a workbench, where I can arrange axles, gears, and pulleys in various experimental configurations. Stock Drive Products/Sterling Instrument used to have one, but it included hundreds of precision gears and parts, and cost about $2800.

Lego Mindstorms, or Meccano.
