EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50

  1. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.
  2. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.
  3. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks.
  4. Over several weeks, try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)
  5. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

This is among the most useless exercise regimens one could possibly prescribe. Pushups, kneebends, squat thrusts, chinups, walking, running, weight lifting, kicking/punching a heavy bag, shadow boxing, ANYTHING makes more sense than the above silliness.

No offense intended, but it reflects the profound depth of ignorance amongst the general public concerning exercise as a health modality. Albeit with possibly good intentions.

And absurd within its own framework: Goddamm Hulk Hogan couldn't hold 100 lb sacks at arms length, in each arm.

Altho I'm not a *big* fan of walking, walking is useful, and is additionally useful as a benchmark. Even leisurely walking is *heads and shoulders* above the preposterous suggestion here, and above most ab-based absurdities, the gazelle, and a bevy of other rip-offs.

The fundamental bottom line to all legitimate exercise is substantial force over a substantial range of motion, with some notable exceptions, such as

*legitimate* isometric routines, walking (basically nature's baseline for exercise), and running, which employs very large forces over a repetitive small range of motion--despite appearances to the contrary.

If anyone wants details, or to talk infomercials, or challenge the above, feel free to email me. I'm bored and lonely anyway, with boucou entreepreeneerial and existential angst, and looking for ways to avoid m'shop.

I thought it was a pretty funny joke. But then I did figure it for a joke at the end.

See you at the gym tonight...

WHOOOSH!

Sounds like "Pre-Meltdown" has had a sense-of-humor-ectomy.

Well, that one skipped right over yer head, didn't it? :-)

Cheers Trevor Jones

Oh s*it, you mean I was HAD?? Goodgawd, the wife keeps tellin me to stay off the web!!

But, I do have some valid defenses:

  1. Stormin HAS said a lot of dumb off the wall s*it over in home repair and HVAC. Are you sure he was foolin??
  2. Dumber s*it has been advocated in fitness, so I really didn't catch the put-on.
  3. I'm in renewed Existential Tizzy, as I just saw a fatter-than-ever Tony Little hawking the as-useless-as-Stormin's-potatosacks Ab Lounge. Eye-speck, inyone??

So I guess ahm gonna stay bored, lonely, and in existential crisis?? goodgawd... A'ight, off to the shop....

Yup, ya bin had!

David
