Could there be a good side to that? If dope smoking ages you, maybe you come out of it sooner, quit smoking, and have more life to live.

Agreed. I used to be very convinced that pot wasn't any more harmful than alcohol, but as the decades have passed, the people who continue to smoke pot have no lives, no careers and no futures; while most of the people who drink have done OK.

Now, there could be a reason for this other than the neurochemical changes caused by smoking pot... Because pot is illegal, only hardcore potheads pursue it with any sort of regularity. For example, if alcohol was illegal and pot was legal, the pricing would be reversed as well (hundreds of $$ for a bottle of booze vs. $20 for an ounce of weed) so the only people who would be drinking alcohol would be hardcore alcoholics who aren't abstinent, because no one else would want to pay the price and risk the legal problems. And because people who are alcoholics use alcohol differently than people who aren't, in that scenario the average alcohol user may be in the same boat as the average long-term pot user is today.

I can't say whether the effects of pot cause the wrecked lives of the long-term smokers, or if a certain type of person (who may have no future to begin with) is more likely to be a pothead.

I'd like to see an in-depth psychological study on the personality types most attracted to various drugs.
