Balzar backing-off device plans wanted

I want to make some form cutters and this mechanism seems to be what I need. So far all I have found are a couple of pictures but not enough information to construct one. In operation it converts a normal lathe into a relieving lathe by just installing it between centers so that milling cutters can be made with each tooth relieved. The blank advances one tooth per revolution of the lathe by means of eccentrics and a ratchet. Thanks for any help, Charles lessig

What you describe sounds like the "Eureka form relieving tool" that was invented by Prof Denis Chaddock and Ivan Law and is described in Ivans book "Gears and Gear cutting" which is no 17 in the Workshop Practice series published by Argus Books with the ref ISBN 0 85242 911 8.

The description and drawings start at page 123

Argus Books may well now be Highbury Leisure Publishing as they also used to publish "Model Engineer" which is now Highbury

Here is a US source for you !!!

Charles,

You are more than welcome! I got interested when I bought a Eureka at a SM&EE rummage sale - problem is it's not been very well made so is a bit sloppy. If I were making one now I'd scale it up so that it took 1" bore cutters and was a bit more solid.
