Camshaft magnetism

I work for a major engine rebuilder and there is a problem with both cam and crankshaft magnetism. Any tramp particles of iron are attracted and end up in the bearings. We check all parts and degauss when necessary. Does anyone know if this a new phenomenon or has it always been present but was neveer looked for? Is it caused by all the sensors in later model engines? Thanks for any comments.

Go back to the electric and magnetism section of your grade school science book and you will find that a piece of iron spun within a magnetic field(or through the flux lines of the field, I can't remember for sure??) will itself become magnetized.

In this case you have the crankshaft and camshaft spinning within the earth's magnetic field, so they become magnetized.

Unfortunately degaussing is probably your only course of action, although I seem to remember that you can demagnetize with a sharp hammer blow also. I think I've also read about vibratory stress relieving?? Maybe this would help??
