Cutting 1/8 plate with a circular saw?

Just had a thought to my previous question. I have a table saw one of those 99 dollar jobs from Lowes. Can I put a metal cutting plade on it to cut my 1/8 plate? Will it tear the saw up? WIll it do it fairly quickly?

What you want is a Wormdrive skilsaw, and a Drycut carbide saw blade for steel.

Tenryu Steelpro

or Morse Metal Devil.

Both will go through 1/8" steel like thin plywood.

They cost about $50 each and last a long time. I use a Skil 77 saw and a Steelpro blade to cope I-beam and channel for structural steel.

I have used abrasive wheels on 1/4 inch plate, very slow, noisy messy, destructive to the saw.

Ernie's suggestion is probably a better plan, use a special metal cutting blade.

Ernie: Will that work just as well on 1/4 inch plate?

I believe that the cutting blades will tend to spray metal shards, so safety goggles are mandatory, and be prepared to clean up the shards.

I didn't see Ernie's post in this thread but if he recommended the Morse Metal Devil blade

as he has in the past I can second that. They are great. Most recently I cut through a piece of 1.25" diameter cold rolled (1018) bar with no trouble at all. Took all of 20 seconds or so, no harm to the saw (Skil worm drive about 15 years old) and left the cut barely warm to the touch. Do wear your safety gear (eye protection mandatory) as chips go everywhere. Makes quite a racket too. I have the steel cutting blade. Tooth rake is different for Aluminum they say. Ah, here is the Morse web site with all the videos

if you want to see the thing in action. I bought mine locally in San Diego at D&D tool but you can see them at the first link above.

Ernie,

I've been meaning to get one of these blades as my father-in-law gave me a worm drill skill saw. I have a ton (literally, no exaggeration) of 304 and

316 SS sheets. Will these blades take SS?

I also have a bunch of AL sheets. Should I use this blade on AL?

Is there a store in Canada that sells these blades?

Why does one need a worm drive saw? I've got some old cheap saws sitting around that I'd love to use for this. Also, if one wants to cut 1" square steel tubing with .125" walls, does one use the blade for under .250 thick steel? I ask because the saw would be cutting through 1" of steel until it penetrated the wall.

They will cut Stainless steel, but at a much reduced lifespan. SS is just brutal on dry-cut blades.

Probably.

Wormdrive or "hypoid" saws have much greater torque at the blade and a lower RPM. A direct drive saw will wear out very quickly with a dry-cut blade on it cutting steel. It just hammers the motor and transmission.

I have cut 3/4" steel with mine.

Tenryu now makes 3 blades for skilsaws with different tooth counts for different thicknesses. More teeth for thinner metal. Fewer teeth for thicker metal.

I use the $35 Matshushita version:

I got a Skil worm drive to use it with, but found that I used it most in the table saw. So much so that I got another table saw to use exclusively with the steel-cutting blade.

You really don't want to use an abrasive blade in your table saw. It is just too dirty, both for the saw and the whole shop - very fine steel dust everywhere.

According to the Metal Devil parent website at:

they have warehousing in Toronto and Vancouver so presumably they do sell some stuff up here.

You could contact them (see website) and ask for local distributors.

Try calling a saw shop near you. See if they can get Tenryu, Matsushita or Morse blades. All 3 companies make a 7-1/4" dry-cut blade for wormdrive saws.

Bummer - no diamond arbor - didn't see a small blade for my wormdrive skillsaw. When ready, I'll have to inquire.

I just noticed that some blades have diamonds. Have to look - doesn't say. I have a diamond arbor on my worm gear.

They have a diamond punch out built in.

The Tenryu, Morse and Matsushita blades all have diamond puch outs.

Problem is I dont have a hypoid saw whatever that is. I would love to do this on my cheap table saw so I could use my fence for straight cuts. Is there a way to convert a table saw to a hypoid table saw?
