yes, it will happen if you don't watch out. much wood turning is done with a scraping action = heat. some wood turning tools have a cutting action, but not every wood turnenr knows that.

You might be giving up too soon on welding the HSS bits. You aren't by any chance quenching them, are you? If you are, you are creating microscopic cracks that allow the breaking.

I've brazed it without any problems, but that is not quite as hot.
