Face Plate Bolts

I've got a face plate I picked up off ebay for my lathe. It's got four slots which work well with teenuts, and a bunch of square tapered holes about 0.62" tapering to 0.60" at the face.

Does anyone have any idea what type bolts or nuts would be used in these? The only thing I can come up that look close are plow bolts.

Thanks.

I would expect 1/2" carriage bolts would work, and that's likely what they were intended for. It avoids the need to use a wrench on the back side, which, on occasion, may not be accessible.

5/8" Carriage bolts are what you want. Bugs

Are carriage bolts available in better than grade 2, or is that adequate for clamping work to a faceplate? Plow bolts are available in grades 5 or 8, depending on style, that's why I was considering them.

"T" nuts should work in the square holes too.

I don't think so.

The major diameter won't clear the hole, nor will the square fit in the .62". Stick with 1/2"-----which, even in grade 2, will be strong enough, unless you have one hell of a lot of HP at your disposal. Besides, not all clamps will accommodate 5/8" bolts. If you can get them heat treated, so much the better, because that extends their useful life.
