Help indentifing a machine taper

Hi All;

I'm trying to identify the taper on a drill press I've recently aquired. The top of the taper is ~17.1mm and the bottom is ~15.8mm just like JT6 but the overall length of the taper is only 23mm so it 'aint.

Does any one know what this coule be?

Thanks

Joel

It lists the specs for Jacobs tapers and a few others.

Jacobs made an oddball "2 short" that some import drill presses use, but your dimensions don't seem right for that one (shrug).

Hi Leon;

Thanks for the reply, however I've checked against all the standard machine tapers I could find, including the Jacobs list from that site with no luck :-(

I'm starting to come to the conclusion that it is a non-standard attachment.

Thanks again

Lots of taper standards out there, not a lot of them currently in use, though. If it's an Asian drill press, there were some imported that had a lesser-used taper, was discussed in.r.c.m. years back. Chucks with that taper were available back then from a few suppliers, were expensive though. If you got a good deal on the thing, you know why now.

It's an Australian machine which I got for the hassle of moving it, so even if I can't find a chuck I'm up one motor and 200+ Kg of scrap steel :-)

there are places that can regrind a taper - some places specialize in this type of work - and I know there are machine shops in Australia - so it might be worth looking around and see if you can have it reground to a standard

Dumb question/thought... but have you verified that the female taper in the drill press actually matches the chucks taper well? Maybe somebody just jammed the wrong or a modified taper into it and it worked good enough for them (shrug).
