Depends on who's news server you're on. I'm working from an alternate server as my regular AT&T/SBC one is hosed.

Nah. I've only killfiled two people in a.m.c and r.c.m and then I just mark them read.

It is a problem with the upgraded software at newsguy. It is now getting better -- but still not quite fixed in my experience. What is happening is that batches of articles are being marked as expired because of timing errors in the servers. If you can save your .newsrc and reset it before going back into the newsreader the vanished articles will reappear. (I didn't bother figuring out what your newsreader is, so I don't know what its equivalent to a .newsrc file is called. The name which I am using is standard on unix based newsreaders, and is a plain text file which you can edit at need. (But it helps to know what you are doing.) As an example, what I see for this newsgroup in my .newsrc file is:

====================================================================== rec.crafts.metalworking: 1-835775,835777,835779-835791,835794-835803,

Note that this *should* be one line, but I've folded it to keep from overflowing screen widths on systems which care. It is a mix of individual article numbers and ranges of article numbers which should be considered already read.

What you can do is to simply opt to mark all articles in this newsgroup as already read, which would leave something similar to the first pair of numbers shown on the first line, and nothing else, and then subtract from the second number about 250 for each day you want to back up -- then be prepared for a lot of articles which will come back.

And first -- make sure that your newsreader keeps a plain text file as its .newsrc equivalent -- or you won't be able to edit it to back up after marking everything as read. And save a copy of the file under another name before trying anything -- so you can get back to where you were at least.

Good Luck, DoN.
