MILLING AYTTACHEMENT ADVISE

I posted a message that I was looking to buy a milling attachement. Two people were kind enough to offer up attachements they had available. The first one was the Atlas model made specifically for my machine for $125.00 and the second was a Palmgren 250 for $75.00. Would anyone like to offer opinions on which would be the better unit. The Atlas looks much heavier duty and I think I'd prefer the method on mounting which involves removing the cross slide completly whereas the Palmgren simply mounts to the toolpost.

The Atlas unit mounts on the cross slide, in place of the compound.

I have the Atlas Milling attachment for my 12" Atlas lathe and have been very pleased with the work it turns out.

For precison milling, you need "sturdy", and while I'm not familiar with the Palmgren unit, it's my impression that mounting a milling adapter on the cross slide toolpost would introduce an undesirable amount of play.

I paid $230 for my Atlas milling attachment in 'like new' condition, so an offer of $125 (depending on condition) sounds like an excellent buy, particularly if that price includes the mill collet and drawbar and the adapter still contains its upper an lower vise jaws (often missing). Also, frequently missing are the two small pins that are required to attach the Atlas milling adapter to the lathe, but these can be easily turned or purchased.

Buy them both, try them both. Put the one you don't like on ebay and make yourself some money. Paul
