Modifying a lathe to follow patterns

We want to be albe to cut curves of up to 44 in in length. They are gentle curves. Swamped rifle barrels to be specific. Can you make something to cause the tool to follow a pattern? We don't have a lathe yet but plan on getting one in the next year. Any out there that are easier to modify? Or are they all the same?

You are looking for something called a "tracer lathe".

They are quite common on Ebay.

No 220-pound thug can threaten the well-being or dignity of a 110-pound woman who has two pounds of iron to even things out. Is that evil? Is that wrong? People who object to weapons aren't abolishing violence, they're begging for the rule of brute force, when the biggest, strongest animals among men were always automatically "right". Guns end that, and social democracy is a hollow farce without an armed populace to make it work. - L. Neil Smith

"true trace" was a popular hydraulic tracer attachment, we have 2 of them at work, but since we acquired our cnc lathe, only use the one we adapted to use on our 36" swing american lately
