Scratch Removal For Polished Stainless Cookware?

Is there a simple one or two step product that would remove surface scratching on polished stainless cookware by hand? The metal is 18/0. The scratching, or actually scuffing, is on one small area. I don't mind the elbow grease. Would appreciate any recs for this. Thanks!

Lapping compound maybe, although you may have trouble getting past the dull stage. Basically, the procedure would be apply some lapping compound to a rag and start in. The grade, or "grit" chosen would be dictated by the depth of the scratches. You will probably have to switch to very fine "wet or dry" emery paper to polish out the dulled area left by lapping. Final polishing might be done with some sort of stainless polish; Google is your friend, here.

Won't this require passivating afterwards?

Sounds like you want to use jeweler's rouge. It's extremely fine and reddish in color. I recently purchased a Dremel Tool (the kit) which contains a small thimble sized package of the stuff along with several buffing wheels and the related spindle(s) to mount them on.

There used to be an emery cloth available which was reddish in color (the rouge ????) and was extremely fine, but have no idea where it could be obtained.

Crocus cloth? Any good hardward store.

You don't want to use either rouge or crocus cloth, both have large amounts of iron oxide, which will start rust spots. What's needed is a non-iron-based polish, knifemakers use "green bar", which is chromic oxide, IIRC. There's many knifemaker's suppliers out there, google is your friend.
