Well heres a site that gives breakdowns of what Stoddard is made out of.

There are differences in molecular weight distributions, and in impurities. The cheap stuff will have sulfurous impurities and very-low-volatility components that will goo things up.
By far the cheapest, reasonably pure petroleum distillate solvent is ... Coleman fuel, including the cheaper Wal-Mart store brand. Very light, very fast to evaporate. I use it by the gallon in a Sure-Shot sprayer.

A little schpritz on parts to degrease them after machining, that sort of thing.
