Uniflite Boats

I just picked up a 1973 23' uniflite sportfisherman. It is a keeper. I'm in the research phase. The hull is perfect, but it has two 4 cylinder engines marked FoMoCo. I think that is code for some communist plot. It has OMC outdrives. Before I rip them out and replace them with American (Chevrolet) engines, I wanted to get some background info on the performance they provided in the stock configuration. They are supposed to be 120 HP each, but I don't know what engine I have here. Anybody have any info on this boat? Manuals? Experience? Thanks. Paul

If those are pushrod engines, I'd bet they are a variation on the old 1600cc English Ford engine. 120 HP is about what they would do with no emissions controls. It was the base engine for the Pinto, and the spec motor forForula Ford race cars. If you pull 'em I'll take them off your hands :) Texas Parts Guy

The "English Ford" is the Kent engine, used in the '78 - '80 Fiesta sold in the US. I had a dozen. The code name for the Fiesta was "Bobcat", the Mercury name for the Pinto; this can cause confusion.

The company "forparts" has parts.

Also used in the Lotus, but with a 4 valve head. When tweaked and bored and turbocharged, you could run up to 300 hp, with 500 hp for one race.

Ford still sells the engines as an industrial unit, rated at something like

35hp.

These engines are easy to spot because the oil pump is on the back and has a sort of rounded triangular cover about the size of a beer can bottom. It is held on with 3 bolts, I think 10 mm heads.

If the fuel filters clog in the standard 2bbl Webber carbs, they run lean. After a few minutes the deep-dish ashtray pistons will break across to the ring groove.

Texas Parts Guy, Yes they are pushrod engines. The sparkplugs go down from above, off to the side, like injectors. I think there may be a diesel version of the same engine. I did a search for "Ford Industrial" on ebay and got a listing for a rebuilt engine which looks the same and which they said came from a Bobcat. Paul

1970's - 1986 OMC 'Cobra' 120hp where Ford manufactured 4 cyl 2.3 liter with an OMC outdrive. Very common engine/outboard, usually in pairs. The block is essentially the same as the SVO mustangs from the 80's, different bearings, cam, heads etc.

Sounds like the Kent engine. A very good basic engine. Lots of parts still available, especially through racing parts suppliers. Check out
