Anybody got any surplus Marine VHF boat radios kicking around?

Looking to buy/swap/trade for a couple marine band transceivers for my sailboats.

Nothing fancy needed, just working properly. I can fab up any missing brackets etc (of course)

My two project boats as they go through upgrades/refurbs

"The socialist movement takes great pains to circulate frequently new labels for its ideally constructed state. Each worn-out label is replaced by another which raises hopes of an ultimate solution of the insoluble basic problem of Socialism, until it becomes obvious that nothing has been changed but the name. The most recent slogan is "State Capitalism."[Fascism] It is not commonly realized that this covers nothing more than what used to be called Planned Economy and State Socialism, and that State Capitalism, Planned Economy, and State Socialism diverge only in non-essentials from the "classic" ideal of egalitarian Socialism. - Ludwig von Mises (1922)

Well, you have your work cut out for you, that's for sure.

Looks like the Ensenada might be in better shape, structurally. But it's something of a dog as a sailer. At best, it sails.

The Venture 24, if handled well, can be a formidable rat racer. My first cabin boat was a Venture 22. They are very lightly built, and that _can_ be fast.

But it ALL depends on the shape of the sails. Some people think if the sail isn't torn, it's "ok". I'm not one of those people.

If you want to move to windward (any), you will have to fly that sail - like a wing, instead of a parachute.

Sails that are stretched out of shape don't work well to windward. Save money where your can, if you can, but don't scrimp on sails. A new suit of sail can do wonders for an old hull. And if possible, buy a full suit - made to match each other.

Kick back at the helm and gaze up at your wings...

Aye. This is a satisfying way for men to travel.

Another thought?

It's a sailboat. But they do sometimes have motors.

If possible, mount any outboard motor on the starboard side of the boat.

That puts the motor tiller inboard where it is within reach.

Any battery installation: Motors sometimes have generators, and starters... Fuse at the battery. Within a few inches at most. Google marine battery fuse. or

I picked up a nice stiff Bower Sail 150% genoa on Craigslist from a gal in Minnisota for $20 (plus $27 shipping) that gives me some hope. And one of the chutes from the FJs will be flown..not real big..but its a start.

Ayup. And its been largely stripped internally so its light. I cant tell the difference between the E20 and the V24 when hooked to the back of the Ranger..other than width.

Neither am I. Ive got a pretty long sailing history behind me, having raced for a number of years, primarily Thistles, before I started repairing machinery. And as Im sure you know...Thistles are not easy boats to sail. It trophied well for me. Shrug.

The E20 has a very good suite of sails on it. The boat really doesnt have much sail time under it. Ive not put up the sails on the V24 yet. One project at a time. The V24 is in the Survey stage..but I have hopes the sails are in good condition. They "look good" in the bag..but they could be blown to hell. They are NOT the original ones that came with the boat. I dont even know if there is a genny in the bags. The last owner was quite ambitious about making her into a good sailer, given time restraints and some cash issues...so I have hopes. Shrug.

Ayup

Ayup.

Aye..that it be.

One of my buddies has shrimper he picked up somewhere and just pulled the batteries..a pair of deep cycle BIG 12vters. He is replacing them as a matter of course and I asked for the old ones. He is putting them on test as of Saturday and we will see if they are ok, or are deaduns. We do a fair amount of back and forth swapping and trading so if they are good, Ill wind up with any that are good. The engine on the V24 is a 9.9 long shaft electric start with an alternator, the engine on the E20 is a short shaft 5hp with no electrical. I have a Motor Guide

37 foot lb trolling motor...with the remote control pedal, Im trying to trade for a bigger simple transom mount motor. I picked it up on Ebay for $5.

Its in far too good a shape to rip off the remote control pedal..but I will if nothing else turns up. A lot of the small lakes here have banned 2 stroke engines so having a electric motor would be fun.

Ive got (6) 2'x 4' solar panels that Im likely to be stacking a pair of them off the stern of the E20 in a bimini configuration. I can get

1" stainless tubing for the asking...one of my clients is the Magma marine bbq maker..and they go through a shitload of stainless tubing on my machines...so building a stern setup for holding my bbq and the solar panels etc etc is easy. Bending it..not so easy...cringe..but I can do it and Tig it. Minneys Marine gives me a significant discount on even their cheap stuff..so the rail odds and ends wont be all that much to mount it on the rails and stern. Worst comes to worst..I have some clients with neighbors who do such work and I can barter for having an expert do it properly if its too much for me. Though Ill give it hell first.

Something like this

That would be rather convienent for weekend trips up to the Sac. Delta and over to the coast. I plan on sailing a lot with either boat and Im always looking for other boats to come along for little or nothing. Im sure both of these current boats are only "passing through"..though Im not in a hurry to swap off either of them.

Im fairly active on this group...

And Ive located about 200+ free or less than $1000 boats in the past month or so and posted them. Lots of boats out there...a simple example for any Ontario area Canadians..the most recent posting..

Btw..I find lots of them in the Dallas area btw...Craiglist...is a good source.

etc etc....

So Im not done with my evolution..but at the moment..Ive got what Ive got. Shrug
