It's the helmet !!

All this time I've been looking for the cause of the "bright flares" when welding steel and stainless . Well , I finally found it , and it's my HF auto-dark helmet . I can't understand why it does it on steel and not aluminum ... at the same amperage . I found the problem the other day , when I decided to see if my other auto helmet worked

Take it back to HF for a replacement. I have one of the cheap HF autos as well as a Jackson EQC and haven't had an issue with either. I also mostly weld steel.

My HF auto darkening helmet works, but the darkness pattern, when engaged, is not uniform across the entire lens, there are dark patches and not so dark patches.

I didn't notice this when I bought the helmet, but I wish I had.

I've had to HF AD helmets. A cheaper one and the more expensive one. They both worked. I liked the cheaper one better because when I stopped welding it went back to clear faster. Unfortunately it die. The other works fine, but it takes a good half second or longer to go clear when I stop welding. Makes some types of welding go slower.

Take a look at Ebay item 300902090802 Adjustable auto dark filter with sensitivity switch for $16.65 and free shipping.

The same vendor has filters with a switch to vary the time to go back to clear for a couple of dollar more.

I missed those , I need to look again . Might be the solution , they'll fit right in my old auto helmet . I do plan next time I go to Memphis to try to swap this one , even still got the box .

Just bought one . Still plan to try for a swap on the other one at HF . I may even still have the receipt , I got it the same time as the rotary laser and I made sure I saved that one - lifetime warranty .

When I started welding a fair amount of stuff, and my HF helmet died, I bought a Miller helmet. It was a lot more money, but it is worth it. I have since came across a couple of HF helmets at auctions and had a chance to compare. The Millers are far better, better reaction time etc.

good price.

No time delay though
