I just called this particular dealer and the story with them is that their salesman has it all bespoke. However, they gave me three more suppliers who have it -- they even know how many gallons each of them has -- and I'm waiting to talk to Karl.

As noted before, we never used much alachlor out here so not aware of what are other non-Monsanto trade names but the searching I did wasn't very informative. Looks like it's really fallen out of favor as far as I could tell.

No, I didn't do the full-Monte reporter job on it. I'm just trying to find some of the stuff for Karl and to get back to work.

According to the NJ dealer I talked to, people love it.

The reporter in me just came out, grabbed my hand, and made me call Monsanto's inside people. I'll have more to report tomorrow.

I meant apparent loss of favor w/ the manufacturers, not necessarily users as in looking for alternatives for Lasso found no alachlor products at all; just methachlor (often mixed w/ atrazine which I understand Karl's inability to have given the orchard). On the user side, there'd be tremendous demand for Chlordane just for another albeit pest- instead of herbicide but several of the herbicides we used to use are now also in never-never land.

They don't make kasenite anymore?

I have the small can that is pretty much full but is 20 years old.....

Just remembered -- have Farm Service Agency County Committee meeting in the morning. The other two guys w/ me on the committee are a couple of our sizable irrigated operators in the county. I'll ask them what they know on the subject if they have used Lasso in past and if so, their alternatives and if know anything about the Intrro apparent conundrum.

Both are sizable corn/bean growers being irrigated whereas we're all dryland...which right now is exceedingly dry, indeed...103F here this PM.

Well, most of that is over my head. I'm going to stick to the alachlor issue until I figure out what is going on.

From what little I've learned, Lasso was originally formulated for corn and bean growers, but has been used mostly by fruit gowers in recent years.

We'll be experts before this is over.

As I heard, Monsanto's patent on Lasso ran out in the mid to late 90's. They retained market share and fought off generics by cutting the price to the bone.

While Monsanto may have some fears about the spread of the French lawsuit, I would put my money on the idea that, with fear of lawsuits keeping competitors out of the alachlor business, Monsanto believes they can finally ditch this loss leader and sell more profitable replacements.

Even though Kasenit is no longer available there is some stuff called Cherry Red that is used the same way. The instructions are the same as for Kasenit. Midway, among others, sells it. I'm going to buy some because my can of Kasenite is almost gone. Eric

We got another maybe. A very nice gal in SC has some. She has to ask her boss about selling it. We did find its easier for her to move it to my local Crop Production Services vendor. Don't understand why CPS won't work closer together, its all one company.

They list two alachlor-based herbicides; Intrro and Micro-Tech presently.

alachlor is, however, not approved in EU nor Canada so there's certainly that market dampener. Biggest problem outside the one case in France appears to have been quite a lot of well contamination in CA and a fair amount in OH in US. Not sure on standing re: current status there at the moment...
