College Engineering gear hobber castings set

Hi,Has anyone here built up the castings set for a gear hobber that'savailable from College Engineering ? I heard that it's an improvedversion of something called the Jacobs hobber which I've seen describedas "flimsy" and I'm interested to know if the CE version is better inthis regard ? Also, what is the maximum diameter gear size it supportsand can it cut helical gears ?I'm aware of the yahoo group dealing with gear hobbers and know I couldemail CE with my questions but I was just interested to know theopinions of anyone here who has actually used the CE hobber.Thanks,David

Thanks for the comprehensive reply - I guess it confirms the conclusion I'd already arrived at that electronic synchronisation on a vertical milling machine is probably more flexible and less trouble (though given the cost of encoders not likely to be cheaper).
