I just have read the description of my slings. They are Teflon impregnated. Other slings have different names for their coating/impregnation.

A rope never behaves like solid. It always behaves like a rope. Sorry, but you are talking plain nonsense.

They are tensioned, not hardened. No matter how often you repeat your theory, it stays wrong.

The setup is indifferent. You have to accept that. If you need the math, I'd be glad to post it. It's just a bit of Pythagoras.

Here a sniplet from YaleTex (their WLL slings):

"To lift a load without twisting or turning adhere to following instructions: On single-fall slings and chains, round slings and endless flat slings the point of attachment should be over the load centre; double-fall slings should be attached both sides and above the load centre; 3 and 4-fall slings should be attached at one level around the load centre. Preferably they should be attached with equal spacing and above the load centre."

Re the side load: The setup in the picture already has the sideload built in. Look at the sling on the left how it has contact with the gear box. As soon as the slings tension, the lathe is tilted to the back.

Hmmm... The slings I was using sure felt solid when I had weight on them. And once stretched tight between the concrete plinths I was winching out of my lawn (expired slings, getting a home use) I was able to walk across the resultant line, highwire style. No twist,felt solid them, too.

Well, Nick, I was there. When the tension was applied, the slings felt quite solid and acted as if, as well. I am reliably informed that it has to do with as many fibres as possible taking up their share of the load.

Whether the description fits with your view of the world, or not, it fits fairly well with what I have experienced. I may be wrong, too, except the specifics of "behaves like". It may not "be" but it "behaves like" enough to suit me.

I don't need the math. I have seen enough lifts done this way that, despite any math you can provide, I still expect to see more lifts done in this manner, and done safely.

As I recall the picture, the attachement is directly above load center. Both in the picture from the manual, and in the Ebay lift. At the point of the pyramid formed by the four strands at the hook.

The first lathe lift shown in the manual used two endless or round slings, while the second one, of the larger lathe in the picture, showed a four fall sling and spreader bar assembly, and to my eye, both complied with the above. Apparently also to the crane operators. Crane operators are properly qualified in Great Britain and the EU ? In North America, they serve a formal apprenticeship and are the final arbiter of responsibility for the lift.

Yes, I noted the run of the sling across the front. Can't see the run of the rope at the back and have now way to check if it is seeing similar contact. I see that they stuck to standard practice and placed chafe guards on the rope at the contact point. I expect that it would have worked out just fine. May have made the lift more stable, too.

Did you actually try to lift the lathe in this manner, or did you walk away from the idea based on your discomfort with what you saw in the picture?

the guy in the ebay add had plenty of options for lifting and he chose the dumb one ... and that's all there is to it .

still dont understand why the lathes on a boat ...

what you guys should be asking is ...

if he put a 1 ton lathe on one side of the boat weather the boat would capsize ...lol.

Many ships have (or had) lathes and/or mills on board. There were even special 3in1s (not those from China!) for ships.

Don't hold your breath on that one. The "standard" will need to b drawn up and approved by the EU. Could all be travelling in "ant gravity pods" before they sort themselves out. Lathes what were they something to do with those old fashioned people who used to get thei hands dirty? They were about before the Chinese, Taiwanese, Indian ........etc took all that nasty stuff over for us. Like plimsole really - thing of the past. OK, OK I've got my coat....

Oh, the load center is the hook!? Now that really makes sense to me if they advise having the hook above the load. But did you notice that sentence ([] and * by me): | the point of *attachment* [to the load] should be over the load centre

Yes. I lifted it 1 cm above ground and saw how unstable that setup is. I got my Deckel down into the cellar, my surface grinder (small, but still

400kg), my shaper, and my lathe (the other lathe I carried down), oh and the hardening furnace (100kg). All without damage, mostly using my brain and a bit of muscles, a set of WLL slings, a chain block and a crab.

Just a rough idea. Havn't run the numbers. :-) I can recall seeing several rigging charts that specified the derating of capacity due to off angles and the like.

Yup! I can accept that. I often find myself uncomfortable with solutions arrived at by math alone, and tend to "heavier" solutions in places where they are not dictated otherwise. Using 20,000 Lb. rated webbing for lifting objects far lighter than the rated weights, for instance.

Yes I did. I suppose when we start seeing the makers design in a lift eye that meets this criteria, we can use it with some level of happiness. In the meantime we must do what we must do.

Cool! The brain thing is the one a lot of guys miss out on.

I was party to unloading a step shear that weighed on the order of about a ton and a half , from a trailer. It was loaded as a one man operation, by a man that I had already a great deal of respect for. That he safely loaded it himself, rasised him up a fair bit higher, in my estimation.

The sling on the headstock is actually on the spindle - which is free to rotate ...
