Seperating dust particles

I have built a contraption, which grinds plastic to a very fine dust. This takes time, and the machine re-circulates till everything is fine enough, but obviously it is re-circulating very fine dust, which is what I am trying to collect.

ANyone have any ideas how to seperate the very fine dust from slightly larger particles in a jet of air. ie the whole lot is going through a woodworking type dust extractor and I was hoping to somehow have some kind of filter or something which wont get clogged which can just take the very very fine stuff and into another container or receptacle.

Ive looked at cyclones, but not sure it will work in this case

ANy thoughts appreciated

Cheers

You need to create areas of less velocity in the pipe.

IE a bigger section of pipe in one place with a hopper under it ....that then goes back to the normal diameter

The large grains will fall into the hopper and the small ones will stay suspended in the air flow with any luck

You could have several different sizes of these pipes with hoppers ...then you would be able to grade all the stuff into many different grades...the last larger diameter of pipe will catch the finest stuff ...right at the end of several different sizes of pipes with hoppers.

Or you could have a corona wire, like they have in old photo copiers ( statically charged wire)...maybe different amounts of charge will collect different grades of the particles.....not tried so don't know if it will work ....but worth thinking about.

If you are doing a google search the keyword is "screening"

Had a bit more of a think.

It was the corona wire idea, that made me think about this.

Your first idea and what you are doing now is dangerous.

What you got there, is a bomb waiting to go off !!!

The particles will get charged and sooner or later...highly likely with plastic, there will be a spark and the whole lot will go kaboom !!

Just like coal dust ignites in a coal mine.

PS ....because of this forget the corona idea.

And think of wet separation ...settlement tank etc....bleed off the light stuff off the top ...thats if the whole lot don't float....then it will have to be dried somehow.

Or visit a cement works and see how they do it .

Cyclones can be connected in series each designed for the particle siz

gathered and everything must be earthed

A good phrase to search for is "air classifier" unless you are looking to buy finding enough info on the details to build one is the problem.

One that looks interesting.

Why do you want such fine dust, and isn't there a product available? Rotational moulders use quite fine powdered plastic, would that be any use to you?
